Marine Creature Identification

Are you curious to know how we can identify different species underwater?

Observation is key to helping us identify species - we can look for unique traits in the ways animals behave, look, and sound, as well as the differences they have when compared to other species.

Get to know your local marine life:

To do this, you could visit a local beach with your whānau/family or class to practice your identification skills both around the rocky shore and, if safe to do so, under the surface.

  • Printable activity sheet HERE.

Can’t access the marine environment?

If you are unable to connect locally, you could help to identify some fish species online through a citizen science project called Spyfish HERE.
