Episode 8
In Episode 8 of The Seed Pod. Elizabeth shares stories about tracking and trapping of introduced pests, working with Kākāpō and Takahē (two of Aotearoa's taonga/treasured native birds), and utilising art and dance for science communication.
We are going to dive deeper into one of her stories in this Learning Pod using a Play - Observe - Discover - Share structure.
Observe
Elizabeth loves to celebrate birds through her art. She studies the features and personalities of the birds that she wants to show artistically through birdwatching.
After studying these birds, Elizabeth often paints these features in great detail, or uses the movement and personalities of birds in her dance.
In this resource you will study the traits of native birds that Elizabeth often comes across in Wellington. After studying the feet, features and beaks, test your identification skills in our close up bird trait activity sheet.

You might choose to:
Draw, paint or sculpt
Study their movement as inspiration for a performance, or a poem
Try to capture details of their body such as their feathers, beaks, and feet. You could also try to include their movement, food sources and habitat.

Angus’ Story:
"I’m loving swimming in Lake Taupō this summer. It’s cool to think about how the cold, clear water was previously the snow on the mountains in the distance.”
