Episode 3
In Episode 3 of The Seed Pod. Ella shares stories from her freshwater and marine environmental education work, adventures out in nature, and a little bug found in the river that "looks like a person in a sleeping bag with just their head and arms sticking out".
We are going to dive deeper into one of her stories in this Learning Pod using a Play - Observe - Discover - Share structure.
Observe
Are you curious to know how we can identify different species underwater?
Observation is key to helping us identify species - we can look for unique traits in the ways animals behave, look, and sound, as well as the differences they have when compared to other species.
Get to know your local marine life:
To do this, you could visit a local beach with your whānau/family or class to practice your identification skills both around the rocky shore and, if safe to do so, under the surface.
Discover
The marine environment holds so much life! A lot of this life we don’t often interact with and scientists are still learning more about every day. Let’s learn more about a few of our marine creatures now.
In this activity, we will identify these creatures, describe them, find out what they eat, and learn about their habitat (where they like to live).

Ella’s Story:
"One weekend in our flat I needed to test out an education resource for identifying freshwater bugs. So I gave each of my flatmates a worksheet and an ID sheet and sent them round doing a bug hunt!”
