Documentary-Style Event Photography Guide

Documentary-style event photography is all about capturing the full experience of an event. A range of photography techniques are used to show the whole picture, from the activities and larger context, right through to the fine details, the emotion, the special moments of connection, the effort and the impact.

This style of photography takes viewers on a journey and tells the full event story. Because of this, it is a powerful tool for impact reporting, marketing and social media. Knowing how to capture these shots can help uplift and celebrate your work.

We have brought together this porfolio guide from events we have captured over the years. This guide demonstrates the basics of framing, storytelling, and photographic variety. It does (purposefully) include some posed shots. This is one example of documentary-style event photography, however the beauty of photography is that the overall style is an expression of how the photographer sees the events, and wants to tell the story. Every photographer will have their own unique way of doing this.
