Observe

The place Angus described in his story above is called Wadi Al-Hitan (Whale Valley) in the Western Desert of Egypt. The whale skeletons preserved here as fossils are actually not whales, instead they are a closely related (sub-order) of whales called Archaeoceti. These skeletons show a story of evolution 40million years ago at a point where whales had legs and lived on land! Archaeoceti skeletons show smaller hind/back legs as they were slowly changing into marine/ocean -based animals!

Can you imagine whales with legs?!

Fossils can come in many shapes, sizes and forms, but they are all remains or imprints of life. They are a record of what has come before us, and some can even date back 3.5 billion years! Fossils provide a way for us to understand how environments and creatures have changed over time to be what they are today.

Draw what you think the fossils and imprints are from, with a description of where they might have lived and what they ate or how they got their energy.

Discover

Let’s dive deeper into the study of rocks - Geology.

There are so many different types of rocks that we might come across in our local environment.

They are formed in different ways depending on what type of rock they are.

In this printable resource we are going to investigate different rocks, how they have been formed, and then see if we can identify some of our own local rock types.

Printable activity sheet and rock guide HERE.
