Episode 10
In Episode 10 of The Seed Pod. Gail and David Moffitt (my parents) share their stories of nature connection, growing kai/food, family holidays, geocaching, sport, the beginnings of my nature connection journey as a child, and more.
We are going to dive deeper into one of their stories in this Learning Pod using a Play - Observe - Discover - Share structure.
Observe
In Gail’s story we heard about her love for geocaching (similar to a big scavenger/treasure hunt using coordinates and clues). A big part of geocaching is how the caches (containers) are hidden.
Some can be hidden in plain sight using camouflage to disguise the cache as a natural part of the environment. Animals can use camouflage to avoid being seen by predators who want to eat them.
Head out into a local greenspace to observe local camouflage experts. In this activity, you can practice your artistic camouflage abilities by trying to create a disguise for the cut-out critters. If you have access to a camera/phone, take some nature photos to inspire your camouflage.

Discover
In this activity, you’ll make your own version of a cache by hiding a container with a nature item inside (from the ground) and creating a map for seekers to find your cache. Using key landscape features on your map you are aiming to help the seeker to find the location of the cache, but for the cache to be hidden well in that location (like a game of hide and seek).
Challenge: Use your knowledge of camouflage to help hide your cache.
NOTE: You want the seeker to find your cache with some challenge.

Story:
“When I was young, my grandma passed. At the same time, there was a rainstorm and a Monarch butterfly created a chrysalis in our home. When the butterfly spread its wings and took flight, it was as if it were my grandma. Now, when I see butterflies, I think of her.”
