Observe

From a young age, I (Sian) appreciated all parts of nature. In the story shared above from my parents, it is clear that I was curious about the world around me. I enjoyed exploring nature through observation, asking questions, and my art.

In this activity, we encourage you to head into nature with a pencil to observe and draw birds, bugs/invertebrates, flowers, leaves and seeds.

Write down some identifying features of the different things you find. Things like their colours, shapes, textures, patterns and size. See if you can identify them, or describe them to someone else who might be able to identify them.

Discover

Exploring Aotearoa/New Zealand has been really important for my whānau/family and I in forming our identity.

These adventures have not only deepened my passions and expanded my worldview, but also brought us closer as a family.

Exploration and experiences with wildlife and wild places have been core to these trips, and we have enjoyed a range of different experiences from walking amongst glowworms and finding geocaches, to surfing and playing cricket on the beach.

In this activity, you will plan and budget for your dream three day nature-based holiday.

David’s Story:

“As a child, I grew up on an orchard in Hawke’s Bay. We had apple, plum, pear, and nectarine trees, plus hothouse tomatoes in large glasshouses… lots of variety in the fruit. We had sheep amongst the glasshouses too.”

- David Moffitt
